Hello Beekeepers,
Supers are moderately heavy as the bees double their efforts in the dry spells.
Oddly they are not on the golden rod or buddleia they loved last year, but shoot
off into the sky for better forage elsewhere. They are still enjoying the
fuchsia, phacelia and fennel nearby, and I see the odd bee on evening primrose,
thyme, even on a rose, but in general they are buzzing off into the wide blue
yonder.
We picked a great day for the BBQ at Derek and Barbara Eaton’s house. Rain
before and rain after but a brilliantly sunny and warm afternoon. We had two
gazebos to protect the food and drink from the sun, a very interesting garden to
find the hidden bees in and great company. Thank you all for coming and thank
you very much to Derek and Barbara for the time and preparation that made us all
so welcome.
Unfortunately, the Royal Lancs. Agricultural Show was called off when a track
laying lorry sank up to its axles. Despite drainage, the land bordering a very
full River Ribble was just too boggy. It was a shame as the Show was recovering
well from the first very soggy year. More optimistically, the show will have a
new permanent showground from next year at Myerscough, just north of Preston. It
will have a permanent perimeter road, large car park(s) and be a lot more
spacious and convenient to use. Hope to see you there!
The Southport Show starts next Thursday-Sunday, 16th-19th August and, with 200
entries the Honey Show section will be well worth a visit.
Our own next meeting is with the Wirral Beekeepers on Saturday, 8th September,
visiting the Llandegla Moors. With the onset of varroa, the tradition of ‘going
to the heather’ with the bees has almost died out in our branch. This is an
opportunity to see what is involved and, weather permitting in Sept. (!), to
have great day out – it could turn out to be an Indian summer!
Members will meet in the car park of the Liver Inn at Rhydtalog (right hand side
of traffic lights)on the Mold to Corwen Road (A5104) by 2pm to follow the other
cars up to the apiary site. OS Landranger Map 117 ref: 23:55. There will be a
talk and discussion on Heather Honey and, if the weather is good enough, a hive
will be opened. Members then move down to the Rose & Crown Inn at Graianrhyd
(B5430-to Ruthin-right turn in Rhydtalog) where a buffet has been arranged at £4
per head. Contact me for a map or transport help for anyone who needs one.
Please let me know if you are coming and if you want a buffet meal at the end of
the meeting so I can make arrangements with the organisers. Either phone me or
return the slip below.
**An early reminder: members interested in greater knowledge/more involvement in
bees may like to stand for the committee at the AGM. I would be happy to hand
over the reins to an interested person.
Thanks and best wishes for a better end to the season! Good beekeeping Sheila
